Crisis Christmas Appeal London

Homeless charity launches Christmas appeal to help Londoners

Crisis the homeless charity has launched its Christmas appeal for volunteers to help London's homeless.

Homeless problems in London are particulary acute due to the cost of housing and other expenses in the capital compared to the rest of the UK.

Leslie Morphy, Chief Executive of Crisis, explains: “Sadly, it is no surprise that we see homelessness rising so quickly in London.

“Though homelessness is going up nationally, it is Londoners who are particularly vulnerable as rents and housing waiting lists are so high...”

The charity says those sleeping rough are just the tip of the iceberg though with many people squatting and living in poor or overcrowded accommodation.

As a long-term solution the charity is calling for more affordable social housing to be built.

But in the short-term Crisis will provide its annual emergency services over Christmas 2012 to thousands of the city's most vulnerable people.
